Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was a leader of India and the India Independence Movement. He resisted tyranny through mass civil disobedience, firmly founded on total-nonviolence. He is currently known around the world as Mahatma Gandhi, and is officially honored in India as the Father of Nation. October 2, is commemorated there as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence. He first used non-violent civil disobedience as an expatriate lawyer in South Africa. In his earlier life he lived in Porbander, a coastal town in present day Gujarat.
